Vigilant Ductless Split Wine Cellar Refrigeration System FAQ's
Q: What is a ductless split wine cellar refrigeration system?A: A Vigilant ductless split cooling system is the same as any air conditioner with one important difference; the condenser and evaporator are split and are connected by flexible cooling pipes and wires. The two units may be as far as 50' apart and are connected with small cooling tubes and wires.
Q: Why would I need to use a Vigilant ductless split system for my wine cellar?
A: There are several benefits to using a ductless split system for your cooling needs. The first is that the evaporator can be placed virtually anywhere in your wine room and the condenser can be located remotely and connected to the evaporator with tubing and wires. You may also have a wine room where venting hot air to a room next door is not feasible. The ductless split is a solution to that problem.
Q: Can I buy any ductless split system for my cellar?
A: No. There are ductless split systems that are commonly used for cooling living spaces. These systems are similar to the wine cellar units but with two important differences. A regular system is designed for cooling a living space room to approximately 75° F. A wine cellar system is designed to cool the wine cellar to a much lower temperature of 55° F. Even if a regular system was able to be set at 55°, it would probably freeze up at those temperatures. A wine cellar system is designed to cool at lower temperatures by using a higher coil temperature.
Q: How is the Vigilant ductless split system designed?
A: This cooling system is comprised of two parts, the evaporator and the condenser. The evaporator hangs on the wall inside your wine cellar. Through a small hole in the wine cellar wall, the evaporator is connected to the condenser by two small liquid/suction lines, a power cord and a thermostat line. The condenser which generates the heat and condensation, as well as noise, sits up to 40' away in the mechanical room, unfinished basement, or outside on a slab. This offers greater flexibility with respect to the placement of the wine cellar cooling system itself.
Q: How much noise inside my wine cellar will the Vigilant ductless split system generate?
A: The evaporator fan is the only moving part inside the wine cellar, therefore the noise level inside is minimal.
Q: What is the appropriate sized area to install the Vigilant ductless split condenser?
A: The cooling system condenser must be installed in an area at least as large as your wine cellar. This system will produce heat and noise, so placement should be in a non-living area. Similar to the through wall, the area where the condenser sits must have adequate ventilation in order for the system to cool properly.
Q: Will I be able to install the Vigilant ductless split system myself?
A: No, an HVAC technician must install the unit to insure it is done to manufacturer’s specifications.
Q: What types of connections will I need for my ductless split system?
A: The connections needed to install your Vigilant ductless split system will vary based on the size of the system being installed. Please refer to the system pricing chart above for information on each system. Remember, the remote condenser will need the same coolant lines as well as an electrical connection.
Q: If issues with the system’s performance occur, how can I get them fixed?
A: This system is commercial grade and very durable, thus fewer issues arise. If an issue does arise, an HVAC must be called and brought to the site to minimize down time.
